MyChart Redesign Case Study
Improving the Patient Experience Through Simplified Healthcare Navigation
🩺 Project Overview
Project Type: Redesign Concept
Role: UX Designer (Solo Project)
Tools Used: Figma, Pen & Paper (initial sketches), Google Forms (research)
Duration: 2 weeks
🔍 Problem Statement
The original MyChart app is widely used in healthcare systems but often receives negative feedback due to confusing navigation, cluttered interfaces, and inconsistent labeling. Users—especially older patients—struggle to find key features like test results, appointment scheduling, and messages from providers.
🎯 Project Goals
Create a more intuitive and user-friendly navigation system
Simplify access to critical health features like Appointments, Test Results, and Messages
Improve visual hierarchy for better readability and accessibility
Design with elderly and less tech-savvy users in mind
Make it stand out.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
🧠 Research & Insights
Reviewed user reviews on app stores to gather common complaints
Identified recurring pain points:
Too many nested menus
Unclear icons
Information overload on main screens
Competitive analysis of other patient portals like Healow and Zocdoc
✏️ Design Process
1️⃣ Paper Wireframes
Created rough layouts focusing on simplified IA (Information Architecture)
Prioritized key tasks: viewing test results, scheduling, messaging
2️⃣ Digital Wireframes
Developed grayscale mockups showing:
Home Dashboard with a clear summary and CTA buttons
Appointments View with current, past, and future appointments
Messages Inbox styled like email for familiarity
Test Results section grouped by category and with readable summaries
3️⃣ Visual Design & UI Mockups
Clean blue and white theme to maintain clinical trust and clarity
Used larger buttons and bold headings for accessibility
Reduced cognitive load with consistent layout and iconography
✅ Final Design Improvements
One-click access to the most-used features
Unified navigation bar with icons + labels
Improved legibility and mobile responsiveness
Clear visual priority between important actions and background info

💡 Reflection & Next Steps
This redesign helped me practice user-centered design in a healthcare context where clarity and accessibility are critical. If I were to take this further, I’d:
Conduct user interviews with patients and providers
Build a clickable prototype and run usability testing
Collaborate with developers and healthcare admins for feasibility
